The Mansa Musa Project offers accessible youth counseling in Houston by implementing hands-on counseling resources for at-risk children and teens. Our goal is to inform students and their parents/guardians about the benefits counseling can have on their lives. Our counselors work to provide guidance for youth struggling with mental health conditions as well as those who have experienced traumatic events in their life.
We require families to complete an initial referral form, which can be done online or through your child’s school administration. Once this form has been completed, our youth-focused counselor will have a meeting with your student to get to know them and evaluate their needs. Students will be referred to local agencies to complete any needed counseling based on the assessments. We tailor our program for each individual student to ensure their specific needs are being met and that they are on track for success.
Understanding Mental Health Conditions
The stigma surrounding mental illness can make it difficult for individuals and families to reach out and find the resources they need to lead happy and healthy lives. Mental health conditions are common in teens and young adults, with around 50% of all mental illnesses developing by the age of 14.
Having a mental health condition does not mean you cannot live a healthy and happy life. According to the National Institute of Mental Health’s website, more than 46 million Americans live with mental health conditions, many of these people going on to live productive and normal lives that are not defined by their condition.
Having a mental health condition is not a reflection of you or your family, these conditions develop for a number of reasons and are not the fault of anyone. While these conditions can be difficult to understand, one thing is certain, you have the power to improve your mental health and the team at the Mansa Musa Project in Houston is here to help you.
The Mansa Musa Project is a program designed to identify at-risk youth who are going to have a turbulent transition to adulthood. This may be due to mental health conditions, difficult living situations, and more. While our focus is slightly different at each level of the program, the goal remains the same: To empower the young person to make positive changes in his life.
